MTNA and ISMTA Competitions
NATIONAL (MTNA) - The national program of auditions for brass, string, woodwind, piano (including senior piano duet), voice, and chamber music begins at the state level. Students may also enter an original composition. Students in most grade levels and collegians have the opportunity to compete for the generous cash prizes offered at the national level. All rules are detailed on the MTNA website and in the April/May issue of AMT.
STATE (ISMTA) – There are additional competitions for junior high and senior high students which culminate at the state level, and a state-level collegiate piano competition. There are cash awards for first place winners. These competitions are sponsored exclusively by the Illinois State Music Teachers Association and are entirely separate from the MTNA competitions. LOCAL – Many local associations sponsor competitions and festivals for the students of their members. Often, there are generous cash awards for the winners.
RECITALS - Local associations sponsor student recitals and members can enroll several of their students for public performance. Recital hall reservations and programs are complements of the association.
The ISMTA Competitions start out at the District level. To enter your student into the ISMTA Competitions, download a 2010 Entry Form , print it, fill it out, and mail it to your District Chair, along with payment, no later that September 14.
